Marikina Profile: Newly Elected Mayor Del de Guzman

The 2010 Philippine Elections have come and gone and there have been a lot of things worth noticing.  The very obvious one was that the recent national polls were the 1st automated elections ever.

For Marikenos, it was a turning point since the Fernandos would be officially vacating the mayoral seat after 18 years, thus bringing in a new generation of government servants.   The people have spoken through their ballots in the recent elections and interestingly enough, it's the Liberal party who dominated the top positions for Marikina.  Newly elected Marikina Mayor Del de Guzman, Vice-Mayor Fabian Cadiz and 2nd District Congressman Miro Quimbo all hail from the liberal party.

Del de Guzman is no new name to Marikenos. Born on January 9, 1963 Del has finished his elementary and secondary education at H. Bautista Elementary School and Roosevelt College in Lamuan respectively and earned his degree in Political Science from University of The East in 1985.

As a Marikenyo servant, he has served as Councilor and Majority Floor Leader in the Municipal Council of Marikina from 1988 to 1992 and Vice-Mayor from 1992 to 2001.  He was vice-mayor when Bayani Fernando was the acting mayor during that time.  After serving as Vice-Mayor, he ran and was elected as Congressman representing Marikina City in the Congress since 2001.  He is also the 1st congressman of Marikina City to become the Deputy Majority Floor Leader in the House of Representatives. As he ends his term as Congressman, he will be the 11th Mayor of Marikina City.

Here's a list of organizations and affiliations that Del has been part of:

  • National Movement of Young Legislators (NMYL)
  • National President, 1998 - 2001
  • Deputy Secretary-General, 1995 - 1998
  • Public Relations Officer, 1991
  • Vice-Mayors' League of the Philippines
  • Metro Manila President, 1998 - 2001
  • Secretary General, 1998
  • President Adviser for Youth Affairs, 1996
  • Public Relation Officer, 1995
  • Walang Ku-Corrupt; Spokesperson, 2001 - 2002
  • Rotary Club of Marikina; Member, 1998
  • Marikina "SAPATOS" Jaycees; President, 1992
  • Marikina City Scouting Committee; Chairman, 1992
  • Boy Scouts of the Philippines; National Executive Board – Member, May 2000
  • Metro Manila East Council Boy Scouts of the Philippines; 1st Vice-Chairman, 1992
  • Marikina Peace and Order Council; Vice-Chairman, 1992
  • Marikina Anti-Drug Abuse Council; Action Officer, 1992 – 2001
  • Green Forum Youth; Convenor, 1991
  • Lakas Youth; Vice-President for NCR
  • Tau Lambda Kappa Fraternity; Grand Chancellor
  • Lakas/KABAYANI Political Party; Member, 1988 – present
The years of experience that Del de Guzman brings with him as a public servant is a starting point that the city of Marikina is in good hands.  This June, he will officially start his new role as Mayor.  Congratulations to Del de Guzman.

      3. Dear Mayor Del R. De Guzman:
        Good morning po.
Mr. Melito Arellano, president of Permaline Bagong Lipunan Community Assn., Nangka, Marikina City, issued a memorandum, "NO STICKER NO ENTRY" dated October 29, 2012. We find his action to be unlawful, considering that our place was already TURNED OVER to the City Government. We believe our roads are under the supervision and regulation of the City Government. We, residents are obliged to buy sticker only to enter our very own public place. How about visitors? They rehabilitate iron gate in gate 2 and will be closed effective January 6, 2013.(These gates 1 and 2 were ordered open many times in previous years up to present, but now they will close it again), Please intervene in our behalf, to investigate if his action is against the rule of law. By the way, we are not paying street lights bills and our roads inside our community were cemented by the City Government. Lubos po kaming umaasa sa inyong madaliang action alang-alang sa karapatan ng nakararami at sa ating pinatutupad na batas. Maraming salamat po.

      4. Dear Mayor Del R. De Guzman:
        Good morning po.
Mr. Melito Arellano, president (kuno) of Permaline Bagong Lipunan Community Association, issued a memorandum, "NO STICKER NO ENTRY" on October 29, 2012. We find it unlawful considering that our community was already TURNED OVER to the City Government. We have not been paying street lights bills (unlike before) and our roads inside were concreted by the City Government. We believe that our place is under the supervision and regulation of the City Government, but in spite of that we are obliged to buy sticker from them so we can enter our very own public place. He rehabilitated the iron gate in gates 1 and 2 and to be closed effective January 6, 2013 which was ordered opened many times in previous years and up to present, now he will close it again only to sell stickers. Many residents are unaware of his plan which will tremendously affect the viability of the residents. Please help us and intervene in our behalf to know if his action is against the rule of law. Sana po maaksunan ninyo sa madaling panahon ang aming suliranin ito, alang-alang sa nakararami at pinaiiral na batas.
